Herbal Cough Syrup Safe for Children

Bev Dunne
In 2012 the Australian Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA) conducted a review of children’s cough and cold medicines.  They advised that children under 6 years of age, should not be given over-the-counter pharmaceutical cough and cold medicine and children aged between 6 to 11 years only be given such medicines on the advice of a pharmacist, doctor or nurse practitioner. Because of these concerns, I thought it appropriate this week to write about herbs which we feel are appropriate and safe to use for children suffering from bronchitis, coughs, colds, sore throats, stuffy nose, blocked and inflamed ears or sinusitis.

Anti-Inflammatory Benefits Found by NASA Research

Bev Dunne
There has been much written about green lipped mussel, as a treatment for arthritis and joint pain.  Interestingly, when I first joined the natural healthcare industry 29 years ago, green lipped mussel was one of the few supplements available for treatment of arthritis and joint pain.  Over the years, other products have come onto the market, with this product being almost forgotten however we still have customers who find green lipped mussel is the only supplement which helps their pain and arthritis.

Positive Results For Urinary Tract Infections

Bev Dunne
Urinary tract infections are very common and for many it is the bane of their lives. Believe me I know, I was once a chronic sufferer of urinary tract infections.  As with most illnesses, prevention is far better than cure and it’s therefore important to try to find the cause plus any exacerbating factors.  It is important therefore to ensure your immune system is healthy, you regularly flush your urinary tract by drinking sufficient water, practice good hygiene and also take steps to prevent bacteria from attaching to walls of the urinary tract.

Bev Dunne
Don’t you just hate this time of the year when you can almost see your skin drying out before your very eyes.  Your face seems dull and under nourished, your lips are all dry and chafed and even your poor hands look like you’ve just spent the day scrubbing floors!!  Oh then of course your legs look like a reptile’s skin.   Hmm, a lovely thought.

ENJOY MANGO AND OTHER SUMMER FRUITS ALL YEAR ROUND

Bev Dunne
When winter arrives, we often scramble to find some of our favourite fruits. Maybe this is the time to look at some dried fruit options. When it comes to eating healthy food, the general mantra is ‘fresh is best’, however it can be beneficial to sometimes include some dried fruits in our diet.  Dried fruits can be very high in dietary fibre and as long as we don’t overindulge too much, they can certainly be beneficial for our wellbeing. Below is one of my favourite dried fruit compotes which is great to serve on porridge over winter or with yoghurt as a dessert.

Bev Dunne
Whilst we often relate the cause of memory loss to aging, it is also important to note memory loss and lack of concentration can often be caused by stress, anxiety and depression.  It is therefore logical when looking for a natural supplement to assist with memory and concentration, we should look for herbs which not only address memory but also stress and anxiety.

A Tonic To Get You On The Toilet

Bev Dunne
I have written often about the importance of gut health.  A part of good gut health is a healthy bowel and intestines. As I wrote last week, problems with constipation and bowel elimination are extremely common. This can often be because of poor eating habits however it can also be caused by food intolerances, an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the bowel, stress and sometimes dehydration.

Keto for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), can it help?

Bev Dunne
Many will associate the Keto diet with weight loss, however just as importantly, the Keto diet can also be extremely helpful in treating Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), also known as Stein-Levethal syndrome. PCOS is a common hormonal health condition which affects up to 1 in 5 women of reproductive age. PCOS is believed to be responsible for 70% of infertility issues which is absolutely extraordinary. PCOS has many clinical characteristics including excess testosterone, irregular or absent menstrual period, excessive body hair, weight gain, and male-pattern baldness. The cause of PCOS is unknown, however, there are associations with excess insulin, low-grade inflammation and genetics.

Smooth Moves with Psyllium

Bev Dunne
When it comes to health issues, constipation is one of the most common problems we are asked about.  Not only is constipation extremely uncomfortable, it can be detrimental to our health and wellbeing.  Increasing our fibre intake, especially soluble fibre as well as increasing our water intake, fruit and vegetables can be beneficial in maintaining good bowel health.
